SWAT tryouts
Eloquence escapes me right now.
Bluntness plays my gray matter like children's toy.
440m run: 79 seconds...:)
Push-ups: 48...:)
Sit-ups: 48...:)
Pull-ups: 6..:)
Obstacle Course: 4:07...:(. Needed to be under 4:00. Almost got there but I got hung up with the final two obstacles for toooo long.
I am disappointed. and yet my undying optimism steps in like Auntie Mame. When I started down this path in February I could hardly knock out 15 push-ups, pull-ups were a pipe dream, and my sit-ups were so so. My 440 time? Laughable like frozen molasses.
Now. now I have fast twitch muscle. I can sprint. I can work to the point of exhaustion, to the point of exhaustion, and then harness the power of adrenalin, and wield it like a sword. I learned today however, that adrenalin can wield right back at you, and rip it's power away. I went at this last 6-foot wall today like a blood-thirsty piranha sent from hell and my usually rock solid wall climbing abilities vaporized into a poof of 7 seconds over 4 minutes. I got over the wall. I'll get over the wall again. faster next time.
there is another academy next year. back to work.
And on a more fun note, BACK TO JIU JITSU!!!!!!

Congrats on what you accomplished. I know how disappointed you must be but I love your attitude. Thanks for sharing this journey with us. Watch out for next year - I think you're going to come back with a vengeance.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jen. ...:). Yeah, with this base established, NOW my goal is to max my numbers to achieve maximum points on the physical. So I am looking at 60 push-ups, 60 sit-ups, and 15 pull-ups. The time to achieve maximum points on the 440 is 55 seconds, which is in the 4 minute range (otherwise known as, Yikes!), so I am shooting for the high 60"s to low 70's. One of my training partners has created some obstacle courses in a local park, complete with walls and jungle gym bars, so I'll keep doing that.
DeleteI am taking this week off from all the calisthenics and getting myself into a BJJ class, which will be sooo great.
Lord, that's frustrating, to have that stark line so that a hair either way makes or breaks you. That close translates to IN THE BAG, for all intents and purposes. But it's true, by next year this challenge will be BENEATH you. It will be so satisfying to better your performance.
ReplyDeleteYes, frustrating. But then I had to follow the logic. If I had passed, I still would have been on the lower end of the point scale compared to other candidates. I know they want some women on the team (there is one right now, she is a sergeant and is rippingly cool), but I would feel weird about being chosen over someone else who legitimately deserved it. There were plenty of guys trying out who had their own challenges to overcome and who performed better than me. I don't want to just "get" on the team, I want to MAKE the team because my scores are high and truly competitive.
DeleteDagney...I read this post with such admiration. Physical dedication at that level is something that still escapes me.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I know you'll do what you need to to be ready next time...and I TOTALLY wish we were in the same location so I could train with you.
Well done!
ReplyDeleteNext time!
As you said you have a base to start from that you didn't have before.
@Megan- Thank you! That is a great compliment. And yes, I would LOVE to train with you. I promise to deliver an awesome dining line-up if you visit San Diego.

@Josh- Yes, I just started training again for the next go-around; and THIS time I am starting with ladders of push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups. What a great feeling that a ladder is my starting point, not the goal.

Wow, seems like you're working so hard! I agree with Jen that your attitude is inspiring and that in spite of any frustrations, you're really staying positive and motivated. I've finally updated my blog and added yours to my link list. Your approach to all this should be a kick in the ass for some other people!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations. I am amazed at how hard you worked and how much you achieved. You are truly an inspiring woman!
